Jamshedpur: Dreaded criminal nabbed during extortion attempt on NH-33

Jamshedpur: A high-profile criminal, Santosh Gupta, involved in various criminal activities, was apprehended by law enforcement authorities while attempting to extort money from truck drivers on NH-33. The incident occurred at Pardih, within the jurisdiction of Azadnagar police station. Gupta, along with an accomplice, was engaged in an extortion operation at gunpoint, which took a dangerous turn when they shot one of the truck drivers. The timely intervention of the police led to Gupta’s capture at Pardih Chowk.

The victim of the gunshot, identified as Mohammed Sadakat Chowdhury, was immediately rushed to MGM Medical College Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Upon apprehending Gupta (45), the police confiscated a semi-automatic pistol, a magazine, and a vehicle that the criminals were utilizing for their criminal activities along the National Highway.

Gupta and his associate targeted the truck driver at a roadside tea stall in the late hours of the night. A patrolling unit in Azadnagar was alerted about the ongoing criminal activity at the tea stall, prompting them to swiftly respond. However, the criminals had already shot at the driver in their attempt to extort money by the time the police arrived.

Though Gupta was apprehended by the police, his accomplice managed to evade capture and escape from the crime scene.

A resident of Mango, Santosh Gupta had previously faced serious criminal charges, including the alleged murder of oil mill owner Vikash Debuka in 2003. However, he was acquitted due to the benefit of the doubt. Apart from his alleged involvement in Debuka’s murder, Gupta, associated with the Paramjeet Singh gang, was implicated in various heinous criminal cases.
