Jamshedpur doctor shoots self, critical

Jamshedpur, Sept 23: A 30-year-old doctor is in critical condition after he allegedly attempted suicide by shooting himself with his brother’s licensed gun on Thursday morning at his residence in S Type area under Adityapur Police Station jurisdiction. 

Junior doctor at MGM Hospital in Jamshedpur, Dr Amit Kumar was rushed to Tata Main Hospital in Bistupur where his condition remains critical. 

Adityapur Police Station OC Rajendra Prasad said that the cause of the incident is being investigated. Amit is the son of land trader late Arvind Singh. Accoring to reports, Amit was living in his house in Adityapur for past several months. The reason behind the shooting is not yet clear. 

Currently, Dr Amit is being treated at CCU of Tata Main Hospital (TMH). Dr. Amit Kumar Singh was engaged a month back and was going to get married in November.

Dr. Amit was engaged to a girl from Samastipur, Bihar.

“We are investigating the incident and it is too early to speak on what led to such a drastic step by the victim. As per our initial probe it seems to be a case of suicide attempt. We are looking at all other aspects too. The arm he used was his own licensed gun. We came to know that the doctor was engaged and was scheduled to be married in November this year,” said a police official. He said that the police
are waiting for the patient to recover so that they can record his statement.

Dr Amit has completed his internship at MGM College and is working as a junior doctor at MGM Hospital. He also used to attend patients at Rajasthan Seva Sadan.

According to a source, the incident took place when he was taking tea with his mother and younger brother. Out of a sudden he took the revolver and started behaving like a child. He made three firings out of which he got shot from his own revolver in the third attempt.

After getting information about the incident, Dr. Mrityunjay Singh, former secretary of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), expressed grief.

He said that I am in Pakur but have received information about the incident, which is sad. Here, the doctors of MGM Hospital are also in shock after getting information about the incident. Amit is the son of late Arvind Singh, a land trader from Adityapur. 

Completed MBBS from Karnataka

Dr. Amit Kumar studied MBBS from Karnataka. After completing his course about two years ago, he did internship at MGM Hospital in Jamshedpur and was now serving in the Department of Medicine as junior doctor.

Dr. Amit Kumar did not come to the hospital for duty on Thursday. When the doctors at the hospital came to know about the incident, they were in state of shock.

A team of doctors are currently battling to save his life. An investigation in the matter is currently underway.
