Jamshedpur: Dist administration bans CAA meetings, rallies

Mail News Service

Jamshedpur, Feb 03: The East Singhbhum district administration had, till now, refused to allow processions and demonstrations related to CAA but now, after certain unsavory incidents recently, a high-level meeting has decided that meetings and rallies pertaining to the issue will also be banned. The meeting was attended by police officials and magistrates.

The issue of the protest scenario last Friday came up for critical review. According to the authorities concerned, permission for a protest against CAA before the DCs office had been granted. But the protest turned into a meeting where the organizers had put up banners and hoardings across the walls of the DCs and SSPs offices. When the Magistrate on duty asked leader of the protest to remove the festoons and banners, Babar Khan reportedly adopted a political ploy which left the Magistrate, Jamshedpur BDO Malay Kumar astounded. The crowd at the DC office compound spilled on to the road and prevented the flow of traffic. Although the CAA protesters gave way to ambulances and other emergency vehicles, the crowd of Anti CAA demonstrators remained for two hours. Police jawans on duty remained at the spot until the last bamboo pole was removed and the entire crowd had finally dispersed.

Another recent incident occurred at the Ambagan Bagan Maidan when pro and anti CAA demonstrators had a near faceoff and a major incident was averted due to the timely intervention of the police. As a sequel, the Hindu Utsav Samiti had warned the district administration that if anti CAA demonstration was allowed further, it would call a Jamshedpur Bandh. Based on the negative experiences, the district administration has decided on this stern step.
