Jamshedpur, July 13: Deputy Commissioner Vijaya Jadhav was seen in action leading a drive to remove the roadside encroachment at Sakchi stretch of Straight Mile road on Wednesday. During this, Dhalbhum SDO Sandeep Meena, ADM Law and Order NK Lal, in-charge DSP Traffic Kamal Kishore and JNAC special officer Krishna Kumar were present.

Her action caused a stir. She ordered the confiscation of vehicles parked on the side of the road and also ordered the removal of shops on the roadside. Such was the reaction that people themselves started removing their shops. The vehicles parked on the side of the road were filled in by the police and taken to the police station. For a while, there was an atmosphere of panic among the people. Some people were also seen appreciating this action of the Deputy Commissioner.

The district administration embarked on a massive anti-encroachment drive that cleared Sakchi of congestion by removing several road-side illegal constructions and kiosks.
The drive was targeted at anti-social elements to keep them at bay and curb activities of crime and eve teasing.

The kind of shops which faced the eviction axe included vegetable shops, fruit shops, tea stalls, snacks corner, hair-cutting salon and furniture shops.
According to district officials, they would ensure that the market place is cleared of any type of encroachments including the manner in which the shopkeepers had extended their shops.

An official said the vendors and kiosks were seized from the places from where the administration had received complaints that anti-social elements used to consume liquor sitting there and also indulge in eve-teasing. “We cannot compromise with the safety of the market place. Moreover , people also find it inconvenience to move into the market freely with the passages getting choked due to the make-shift shops,” said he said

According to him , they would ensure that the market place is cleared of any type of encroachments including the manner in which the shopkeepers had extended their shops.

Most of the shop-owners had removed the valuables before the demolition squad arrived, but those who ignored the squad had to face the ire of the administration.
