Jamshedpur DC salutes single ‘Mother Courage’ Geeta Nayak

Jamshedpur, May 15: On reading a report published in a local newspaper on the occasion of Mother’s Day, Deputy Commissioner Vijaya Jadhav expressed her desire to meet Sidgora resident and a single mother Geeta Nayak. Geeta was informed and she met the deputy Commissioner at her office on Monday, May 15.

It may be mentioned here that Geeta Nayak gave birth to a physically challenged daughter but her husband refused to accept the child. Geeta was 21 years old then and was determined to bring up the child on her own as a single mother and today, while staying at her maternal home, is nurturing the child as a doting mother with devotion and giving her all the care and providing her with the necessities required for the special child.

While talking to Geeta, the DC was emotionally stirred. She told her, “You symbolize a courageous mother. You are not only raising a daughter with special needs but also setting a social example by initiating her into education. Your spirit and dedication of rearing a special child even through adverse conditions, is a source of inspiration for all of us.”

DC Vijaya Jadhav enquired about Geeta Nayak’s family and her financial status and had her fill a pension application in her office. Vijaya Jadhav also assured Geeta, “If you require any assistance at any time, feel free to contact me.”

An overwhelmed Geeta Nayak expressed her gratitude to Deputy Commissioner Vijaya Jadhav.

The Deputy Commissioner’s response to Geeta Nayak even amidst her busy schedule reminded one of German dramatist Bertolt Brecht’s 1939 play, ‘Mother Courage and Her Children,’ that narrated a tale of a doughty woman and a single parent, Anna Fierling who never backed away even under adverse conditions of war and was nicknamed ‘Mother Courage.’ Geeta Nayak’s circumstances, in spite of changing times and situations, maybe similar. One may say, ‘Mother Courage and Her Special Child.’
