Jamshedpur, March 15: East Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner Vijaya Jadhav has directed district officials concerned to keep a strict watch on ultrasound centres and portable ultrasound machines to prevent gender determination.

Addressing the annual review meeting of PCPNDT Act and Health Mission Society, the DC said the movements of portable ultrasound machines should be monitored carefully.

The district health officials told the DC the government had stopped the movement of portable ultrasound machines. During the ultrasound examination, more than two doctors or technicians are not allowed to be present in the room, the officials said.

The officials further said that clear and legible declarations against gender determination and female foeticide should be depicted on signboards in a clear and legible manner for one and all to read. Only those pregnant women who have the doctor’s prescription are to be allowed to undergo ultrasound examination, officials said.

Jadhav said the current mortality rate of 212 deaths per one lakh pregnant women was worrisome. She said efforts would be made to bring down the figures.
