Jamshedpur, Nov 29: A couple with a child in two were caught on CCTV cameras in a jewellery shop trying to steal a gold ring. Swift action by police ensured that the culprit was arrested along with his accomplice and the stolen ring was also recovered.
The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon at the Rajendra Jewellers located near Basant Talkies in Sakchi. A couple with a child in tow, posing as customers, entered the jewellery shop and asked to purchase a ring. The shopkeeper, Vinod, later told the police that the couple told him that all shops were closed on Tuesday but they needed to buy the ring.
When the shopkeeper started showing them rings and the couple seemed busy in choosing one, the man suddenly left the shop. Vinod has told the police that the accused had stolen a ring, hidden it in his mobile case before leaving the shop in a hurry.
When Vinod checked the weight of all the rings that he had taken out to show to the customers, it was less than what he had taken out when the couple entered the shop. He then asked the woman where her husband had gone, she claimed that he had gone to fetch money from an ATM. In a little while the man returned but refuted all allegations levelled against him. He said he had not stolen the ring.
The shopkeeper then called up the Sakchi police and when the cops reached the shop they questioned the accused and also saw the CCTV footage. The CCTV footage unravelled the man’s claims as he could be seen pocketing the ring before leaving the shop.
When cops took him into custody and were taking him to the Sakchi police station, he tried to jump off the police vehicle and escape. The cops chased after him and caught him. On being interrogated at the police station the accused confessed to his stealing the ring and said that he had handed over the stolen ring to his accomplice – an autorickshaw driver. The cops then rounded up the autorickshaw driver and recovered the stolen ring from him.
