Jamshedpur cops receive lessons on Cyber Crime, focus on fraudulent withdrawals

Jamshedpur: Concerned over rising cases of cybercrime, District police in association of HDFC Bank on Thursday organised a seminar on cybercrime at the conference hall of Cyber police station in Bistupur. The district police had invited several officials from the HDFC for making the cops aware about the crime.

About 200 cops attended the seminar in which officials explained about the basics on debit card and credit cards. The HDFC Bank screened video clippings of the cybercrime related to the fraudulent withdrawal.

Superintendent of police (Rural) Piyus Pandey inaugurated the seminar at around noon. Pandey while addressing the gathering said that the cybercrime is getting increasingly as a big challenge for the police department.

“Cybercrime is a major challenge today.  Unlike the conventional crime, in cyber crime, the criminals use no weapon and their weapons are internet, mobile phone the netbanking.  We call the cybercrime a big challenge as a cyber criminal has not to come to the field in the open,” noted the SP (Rural) while addressing the gathering.

He pointed out to some extent they are able to detect other form of cyber crime like posting objectionable materials on Facebook, putting objectionable materials for arousing religious sentiments and cheating girls by means of Facebook having created Facebook account on fake ID, but are behind detecting the fraudulent withdrawal.

With the city going hi-tech, cyber crime cases are also on the rise. The crime has shot up this year, going by the increasing number of petitions and complaints that the police are receiving. The latest trend in cyber crime is that of sending e-mails announcing job offers i.e., appointment letters from reputed companies wherein the prospective candidates are asked to responding to the mail for a job in upcountry destinations with reputed corporates. Jamshedpur is one of the most vulnerable cities in the country as people here are generally ignorant.

“In the crime like loot, robbery murder etc, the offenders have to remain present at the scene of crime and there is all possibility of getting caught by the police instantly.  But in a case of cyber crime, an offender can commit the crime by sitting at a distant place.  The police are supposed to detect such crime by making investigation through the cyber technology,” said an official.
