Jamshedpur: The escalating conflict between Iran and Israel in the Gulf region has triggered a severe shortage of commercial LPG in Jamshedpur. As global supply chains falter, local hotels and restaurants face an existential crisis, with many warning of imminent shutdowns if the supply is not restored within days.
Commercial Supply Halted, Agencies Unresponsive
Local business owners report that gas agencies have stopped answering calls for commercial refills. While Indian Oil officials state that domestic supply remains stable with a five-day waiting period, they have temporarily suspended supplies to commercial establishments and industrial units to prioritize household consumers.
Under current regulations, domestic users can only book refills after 25 days, but the complete halt on commercial cylinders has left small businesses—which consume one to two cylinders daily—without any backup.
The GAIL Advantage vs. LPG Crisis
The shortage has created a divide in the city’s culinary scene:
- LPG Dependent: Restaurants in Sakchi and street food vendors in Bistupur are struggling. “I have only one cylinder left, and the agency refused a refill. My shop will close tomorrow,” said Rajesh Rao, a local street food vendor.
- GAIL Pipeline Users: Establishments with GAIL pipeline connections remain unaffected. Aditya, Operations Head at Hotel Alcor, and Sharan Kumar of Madrasi Hotel noted that while their Bistupur outlets are safe due to pipelines, their Sakchi branches face closure.
Local Business Reactions
The mood among Jamshedpur’s business community is one of high anxiety:
“If we don’t receive commercial gas, we will have to shut down or find alternatives. Our hearts are racing with worry,” said Nandlal, a hotel manager.
Sanjeev Raman, Chairman of the Indian Institute of Metals, urged the community to remain calm. “We should not panic yet. We hope the government will find a solution soon. While there will be some hardship, we will overcome this,” he stated.
