Jamshedpur: Champai Soren plans to launch political outfit, eyes BJP alliance after JMM split

Jamshedpur: In a significant political development, former Chief Minister Champai Soren is expected to launch a new political outfit soon after severing ties with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led coalition government. Although the name of the new party is yet to be finalized, it is likely to include a reference to Birsa Munda, the iconic tribal leader, signaling that the platform will primarily cater to the tribal communities.

However, before making a final decision on establishing a new party, Soren’s immediate focus is on joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Sources close to the former chief minister revealed that Soren’s top priority is to align with the BJP, aiming for a prominent position, potentially as the party’s chief ministerial candidate in the upcoming state assembly elections. Soren, who was in his hometown in Seraikela, said that he will remain active in politics.

Soren’s aspirations will be tested during BJP National President JP Nadda’s visit to Ranchi on August 23, where he is scheduled to address a gathering of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). Soren sees this event as a critical opportunity to impress Nadda and secure a position within the BJP. According to a close aide, Soren is eager to leverage this chance to showcase his influence and garner support from the BJP’s top brass.

“Champai Soren’s first priority is to join the BJP and emerge as the party’s chief ministerial face in Jharkhand. The August 23 event with JP Nadda in Ranchi is a pivotal moment for him to make a strong impression,” said the aide, who requested anonymity.

In an effort to demonstrate his political clout, Soren is planning to lead a large contingent of his supporters to Ranchi on August 23. This show of strength is intended to affirm his popularity and compare his influence with other potential BJP candidates, such as Arjun Munda, Babulal Marandi, and Madhu Koda.

Until recently, Champai Soren was a dominant political figure in the Kolhan region, particularly in the twin districts of Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan. His departure from the JMM has left a noticeable void among his traditional support base in these areas, which he aims to fill by aligning with the BJP.

As Jharkhand prepares for its assembly elections, Soren’s strategic move to join the BJP comes with the condition of being projected as the chief ministerial candidate. His supporters believe that his entry into the BJP would not only bolster the party’s tribal vote bank but also position him as a formidable leader within the saffron brigade.

“If Champai Soren fails to secure the chief ministerial face for the BJP, he will likely proceed with forming his new outfit,” revealed one of his trusted lieutenants. This potential new party, if realized, would serve as a fallback option for Soren, providing him with a platform to continue his political journey outside the JMM.

As the political landscape in Jharkhand evolves, Champai Soren’s next move will be closely watched. His actions on August 23 could shape the state’s political dynamics ahead of the upcoming elections, potentially altering the balance of power in the region.

“Champai Soren’s decision to part ways with the JMM and his potential alignment with the BJP mark a significant shift in Jharkhand’s political scene. Whether he succeeds in joining the BJP as a chief ministerial candidate or establishes a new political outfit, Soren’s influence remains a key factor in the state’s evolving political narrative. The upcoming events in Ranchi will likely determine the trajectory of his political career and its impact on Jharkhand’s future,” said a political party leader.
