Jamshedpur Book Fair inaugurated, wide collection on display

Jamshedpur: The 36th Jamshedpur Book Fair at  Rabindra Bhavan kicked off amidst enthusiasm today. DC Vijaya Jadhav inaugurated the fair. Book lovers can expect a wide range of interesting titles in English, Hindi, Bengali, Gurmukhi, Odia and Santhali with publishers from New Delhi, Kolkata, Odisha and other states.. For the past three decades, Tagore Society has been organising the fair, which attracts a large number of students and residents of the steel city.

Students of Tagore School of Arts have lined up a number of cultural events too. Ashis Chowdhury, general secretary of the society said books in English, Hindi, Bengali, Santhali and Gurumukhi would be available in the fair. A total of 67 stalls have been put in the fair. It will continue till November 20.

“Book lovers eagerly wait for the annual fair. Our basic idea is to promote rich literature of different languages and so we were keen to have books of all regional languages at the fair,” said Chowdhury.  He also went on to inform that all precautionary measures such as installing CCTV, fire-fighters, dog squad have been made to ensure life and property during the fair. The society has also lined up events like compilation of songs and cultural programmes to attract book lovers.

“Our priority is more on quality publishers and not just quantity. We would like book lovers to come and enjoy books to cultivate a reading habit,” said the secretary of Tagore Society.

It may be mentioned that Tagore Society, a city based leading educational and cultural organisation, has been organising a book fair for more than two decades. Celebrities like writer Mahashweta Devi, quizmaster Neil O’ Brien have participated in the fair.  The organisers believe that the more children get exposure to a platform where publishers with so many books gather at one place. The interest in reading can thus be developed among children.
