Jamshedpur, Nov 24: The 10 day Jamshedpur Book Fair organized annually by The Tagore Society at the Rabindra Bhawan in Sakchi was inaugurated on Friday evening by chief guest and Deputy Commissioner, Manjunath Bhajantri amidst a traditional atmosphere.


In his inaugural address, DC Manjunath Bhajantri observed, “The romantic rendezvous with books has no equal, it is simply irreplaceable. Merely holding a book in hand gives one an inexplicable sensation bordering joy. The rustle or turning a leaf, the aroma of new paper and print cannot be found in any other medium of reading or learning. May be the electronic media is robbing the younger generation of this exciting feel, but we, as parents can and should take advantage of the scope that the Jamshedpur Book Fair has been providing for over three decades to citizens who should bring along their children to feel the vibes of this unique romance with books that can be gone over again and again.”
This edition of the Jamshedpur Book Fair that was inaugurated on Friday, November 24, will continue till Sunday, December 3.
The Secretary of Tagore Society, Ashis Chowdhury said, “It continues to be our persisting obsession to inculcate a love for books among the new generation especially those who are in the nursery rhyme stages for that is their seeding period. In this year’s Jamshedpur Book Fair essay, 67 popular publishing houses have opened stalls for book lovers of the city and its peripheral areas. The stalls are stacked with an array of books on subjects catering to diverse preferences of visitors. These books are in Hindi, Bengali, English, Urdu, Santali, Ho, Kurmali, besides other languages.”
Highlighting the Tagore Society’s objective of hosting the Annual Jamshedpur Book Fair, Ashis Chowdhury said, “This year’s focus is on school children, and to encourage their participation, tickets are available at a nominal cost of Rs 2. About 25,000 tickets have been distributed among various schools. Free tickets will be provided to students who cannot pay for their entry to the Fair ground. The Book Fair will be open between 2 pm and 8:30 pm from Monday to Friday while on Saturdays and Sundays, the timings will be from 10:30 am to 8:30 pm.”
Tagore Society President, Dr HS Paul, Vice President, Achintam Gupta, Assistant Secretary, Sudip Basu, Chairman of the Book Fair Committee, Shantanu Chakraborty and Jaydev Ghosh, in charge of the Tagore School of Artsand several other dignitaries were present at the inaugural.
