Jamshedpur: In a significant step towards nurturing a strong reading culture and encouraging critical thinking among young learners, the East Singhbhum District Administration has launched a district-wide book donation campaign titled “Donate Books to Create New Stories.” The initiative aims to enrich libraries and develop accessible reading spaces across panchayats, schools, and community centres throughout the district.
Officials said the programme builds on the success of earlier literary initiatives such as the East Singhbhum Literature Festival, which highlighted the transformative role of books in community development and social change. Through the donation drive, the administration seeks to ensure equitable access to reading material for children and learners from all sections of society, particularly in underserved areas.
Residents of East Singhbhum and Jamshedpur, along with institutions, organisations and book lovers, have been invited to contribute new or gently used books. The drive formally begins with collections at the District Magistrate Municipal Library, with officials emphasising that donated books can help spark curiosity, imagination and a lifelong love for learning among young readers.
Books across a wide range of genres are being accepted, including children’s literature, school textbooks, competitive examination materials, reference books, as well as titles in literature, history and science. Donations are welcome in Hindi, English, tribal languages and other regional languages, ensuring inclusivity and wider reach.
To recognise contributors, all donors will be acknowledged on the East Singhbhum Library Plaque. Those donating more than 10 books will receive a complimentary annual library membership, while donors contributing over 100 books will be awarded a lifetime free library membership and given opportunities to participate in future literary and educational initiatives organised by the administration.
Books can be deposited at multiple collection points across the city, including the DC Office, JNAC Office, DM Municipal Library in Sakchi, Town Hall Sidhgora, ECC Flat Kadma, and the Bistupur Community Centre. The administration has also made arrangements for books to be sent via post or courier to the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee office at Hirasinh Bagan, Sakchi.
Officials said the initiative is not just about collecting books but about building a sustainable ecosystem of learning, where access to knowledge can help shape informed, thoughtful and empowered citizens across East Singhbhum.
