Jamshedpur Boils at 43°C as IMD Warns of Heatwave, Thunderstorms and Hail Across Jharkhand

Jamshedpur: The city scorched under a brutal 43°C on Friday, marking one of the hottest days of the season, as Jharkhand braces for an extended spell of extreme weather conditions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ranchi centre, has warned that hot and humid weather will persist in isolated pockets of southern and north-eastern Jharkhand on April 25 and 26.

Adding to the discomfort, the IMD has also forecast thunderstorm activity accompanied by gusty winds and hail in several regions over the coming days. On April 26, isolated areas in the north-eastern and south-eastern parts of the state are likely to witness thunderstorms and lightning, with wind speeds reaching 30-40 kmph.

The situation is expected to intensify on April 27, with thunderstorms, lightning, and hailstorms likely to hit north-eastern and adjoining central Jharkhand. Wind speeds may climb to 40-50 kmph in southern and central parts, making conditions potentially hazardous.

By April 28, the weather could turn even more severe, with gusts of up to 50-60 kmph forecasted in north-eastern and central regions, accompanied by hailstorms and lightning. Southern and north-western areas may also experience similar turbulent conditions.

The IMD attributed this unstable weather pattern to a trough extending from a cyclonic circulation over north Bangladesh to north Odisha via Gangetic West Bengal, at an elevation of 0.9 km above mean sea level.

Meanwhile, heatwave-like conditions have already begun taking a toll on daily life. Besides Jamshedpur, Daltonganj also recorded a searing 43°C, while Ranchi and nearby regions hovered around 39°C, adding to public discomfort and health risks.

Authorities have issued advisories urging residents to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and stay tuned to weather updates. With temperatures rising and storm activity on the horizon, precaution and awareness remain key as Jharkhand enters a period of heightened meteorological activity.
