Jamshedpur: BJYM president taken into custody ahead of Jharkhand CM’s visit

Jamshedpur: Bhartiya Janatantra Yuva Morcha (BJYM) president, Amit Sharma, found himself in police custody on Wednesday morning, allegedly in anticipation of a protest during Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s scheduled visit to Sidhgora later in the day.

Amit Sharma was reportedly picked up from his residence in Birsanagar and is being held at the Birsanagar Thana without a clear reason provided prior to the Chief Minister’s visit.

The BJYM, known as the youth wing of the veteran politician and Jamshedpur East legislator Sarayu Roy, has been actively involved in various socio-political activities. Notably, Birsanagar falls within Roy’s legislative segment, making it a stronghold area for the seasoned legislator.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren is slated to address a party workers’ meeting at the Sidhgora Town Hall, which also falls under the Jamshedpur East assembly segment. The timing and circumstances surrounding Amit Sharma’s detention raise questions about potential political motivations.

It’s worth noting that Jamshedpur East was the battleground constituency where the five-time legislator and former CM, Raghubar Das, faced defeat at the hands of Sarayu Roy in the 2019 assembly elections.

In response to the incident, BJYM Secretary Vikash Gupta commented, “Police have picked up BJYM president Amit Sharma from his home this morning and has been kept at the Birsanagar Thana without food. We gather that our leader has been taken into custody due to the local police’s apprehension that BJYM may demonstrate, highlighting the failure of the police in curbing illegal commercial activities in the Burmamines Thana area.”

Gupta clarified that they had no intention of showing black flags and expressed bewilderment at the local police’s actions. The police, however, have been tight-lipped regarding the reasons behind Amit Sharma’s detention.
