Jamshedpur: Artiste Goutam Shankar Das inspires Karim City College students

Jamshedpur, July 5: The Mass Communication Department of Karim City College hosted an enlightening lecture cum performance session featuring the city’s esteemed theatre and voice artiste, Goutam Shankar Das. The session, held in the department’s shooting studio, provided students with an in-depth introduction to the evolving world of voice artistry.

Addressing students from all semesters, Das highlighted the dynamic changes in the voice industry, emphasizing the growing employment opportunities for young artistes. He explained how voice work has become integral across various platforms, from cartoons and OTT services to South Indian and world cinema, all of which rely on language translation. This surge in demand has created numerous opportunities for voice artistes.

Das reassured students that with proper training and practice, anyone, regardless of their natural voice, could succeed in this field. He stressed the importance of voice modulation not only in artistic endeavors but also in everyday life, noting its role in enhancing character portrayal. Demonstrating the concept of Navras, prevalent in Indian acting,  Das captivated the audience by presenting various emotions through different characters, earning continuous applause from the students.

The interactive session concluded with a lively Question Hour, where students posed intriguing questions to  Das. Participants included Rohit Shukla, Aditi Pandey, Yash Raichand, Shalini Srivastava, Sahil Asthana, Tania Parker, Nitesh Raj, and Zarin Abedi, all of whom received thoughtful responses from Das. The session saw the participation of 40 students from various semesters, including both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Mass Communication.

The event began with an introduction by Dr. Neha Tiwari, Head of the Department, who lauded  Goutam Shankar Das as Jharkhand’s top-grade drama artist recognized by Akashvani. She highlighted his extensive experience, with over 150 dramas and more than 50 short films to his credit. The program also featured radio drama clippings featuring Goutam provided by retired Akashvani announcer and international sports commentator Shahid Anwar.

Kuldeep Bhamra, a department student, welcomed Das with a plant, symbolizing growth and learning. The session saw the presence of Dr. Rashmi Kumari, Syed Sajid Parvez, and Syed Shahzeb Parvez. College Principal Dr. Mohammad Riyaz congratulated the department on the successful event. The session concluded with a vote of thanks from Rohit Shukla, a first-year postgraduate student, expressing gratitude for the insightful and inspiring session.
