Presiding over the meeting, Gram Pradhan of Devshol Dakhin Hansda said former Chief Minister Raghubar Das had performed bhumi pujan for the construction of airport in Dhalbhumgarh in 2019. But in view of strong protest by villagers, the authorities are now planning to build the airport within an area of 240 acres of land, he said.
Hansda said cutting down trees for aiport would snatch sources of income from the villagers and leave them penniless. He said deforestation would also lead to pollution.
Jamuna Tudu said she was happy that an airport was going to be built, but it should not be done at the cost of environment. She said the government should build airport in places where deforestation is not required for development. “The government should not harm the environment to support development activities. After all, it is spending crores on saving the environment. How can it order cutting down thousands of trees then?”
