Jamshedpur: Jamshedpur: In an ambitious move to eradicate tuberculosis (TB) by 2025, the District Task Force convened a meeting under the directives of District Magistrate cum Deputy Commissioner Ananya Mittal. The session, held in the Collectorate Auditorium, outlined the adult BCG vaccination campaign set to commence in July and run through September.
The meeting saw the participation of key stakeholders, including District Council President Bari Murmu, Deputy Development Commissioner Manish Kumar, Civil Surgeon Dr. Jujhar Majhi, District Panchayat Raj Officer, District Social Welfare Officer, District Education Officer, and various Medical Officers In-Charge (MOICs). Block Development Officers (BDOs) joined the proceedings via video conferencing, ensuring comprehensive district-wide coordination.
The central focus of the meeting was the adult BCG vaccination program, a significant initiative aimed at identifying and protecting TB patients across the district. Civil Surgeon Dr. Jujhar Majhi detailed the campaign’s objectives, emphasizing the importance of the BCG vaccine in preventing TB. He highlighted that this vaccine, traditionally administered to children at birth or within the first year, would now be given to adults to curb TB’s spread and impact.
To effectively implement this program, the district will conduct a large-scale survey to identify areas with current TB patients and those with a high likelihood of TB cases. The identified individuals will receive the BCG vaccine starting July 1.
Deputy Development Commissioner Manish Kumar provided crucial guidelines on structuring the vaccination campaign. He underscored the necessity of creating a detailed plan in the Block Task Force meetings and stressed the need for robust public awareness campaigns to ensure widespread understanding and participation. Kumar highlighted the availability of free TB treatments at government health centers, including Sadar Hospital, and the need to raise awareness among those who may not seek treatment due to lack of information.
The Deputy Commissioner instructed all involved departments, including the District Panchayat Raj Office, Social Welfare, and Education, to actively contribute to the survey and vaccination efforts. Emphasis was placed on meticulous monitoring and collaboration to ensure the campaign’s success.
The adult BCG vaccination campaign will prioritize six specific categories of individuals over 18: 1. People previously affected by TB. 2. Individuals in close contact with TB patients. 3. Elderly persons aged 60 and above. 4. Malnourished adults. 5. Smokers. 6. Diabetic patients, particularly those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) below 18, and those treated for TB in the last five years but currently healthy.
The Civil Surgeon was tasked with ensuring a strong vaccine maintenance system and providing clear instructions to dispel any public confusion regarding the vaccination. A multi-faceted public awareness campaign will be launched to inform and educate residents about the benefits and necessity of the BCG vaccination, targeting the aforementioned vulnerable groups.
District Council President Bari Murmu reiterated the campaign’s significance, noting the shift from traditional BCG vaccination practices to this innovative adult-focused approach. He assured full cooperation from Panchayat representatives, emphasizing the critical role of the head count survey in identifying and vaccinating at-risk populations.
