Jamsetji N Tata – pioneer of Industry in India

[dropcaps round=”no”]J[/dropcaps]amsetji N Tata – envisioned the steel plant as a fountain head of India’s industrial regeneration and worked for it, thirty years before the first ingot of steel rolled out fromhis plant. His vision was supported by the British Govt. in the reign of Queen Victoria.

Right from beginning of his purposeful thought the company faced more odds but never compromised on quality and its commitment for corporate social responsibility in extending help to those who need it. This is the basic of our Indian Philosophy. “God helps those who help themselves”. With this philosophy in mind and clear vision Tata Steel turned round Jamshedpur plant to make it a world class company and thereafter all those who gave leadership to the company maintained its fundamental values & corporate philosophy.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru while commenting said – ” when you have to give the lead in action, in ideas – a lead which does not fit in with the very climate of opinion, that is true courage, physical or mental or spiritual, call it what you like, and it is this type of courage and vision that Jamsetji Tata showed”.

While initiating the venture .Jamsetji Tata proved that when trading is converted tomanufacturing the nation always progress. Inspite of all odds & recession at International Level the company is able to produce best quality goods, competitive in International market at low cost and also fulfilling its commitment of corporate social responsibility in field of urban development, rural development, tribal development, assistance in natural disaster through Tata Relief Committee. Tata Steel employees always contributed to fulfill the mission.

His legacy of thought and commitment for nation building was continuously carried out by Sir Dorab Ji Tata his son, J.R.D.Tata who gave leadership for 52 years, Ratan Tata – the Emeritus Chairman and young, energetic Cyrus Mistry, the present Chairman.

In the words of Ratan Tata- The Emeritus Chairman- “The strength of the company is embodied in the spirit of people and the unbelievable will to win’. What has created the spirit? What has sustained it? What has made it effective?”

Right from mid 90’s the leaders like Dr. J.J.Irani, B.Muthuraman, H.M.Nerurkar & presently T.V.Narendran have contributed to turn the company economically sound and true to its philosophy of helping the needy and its positive role in carrying the principal of corporate social responsibility. Their commitment has helped the dream of Founder come true.

It is worth coating – Times of India Obituary on Jamsetji N. Tata, 20 May 1904 “He sought no honour, he claimed no privilege; but the advancement of India, and her myriad peoples was with him an abiding passion”.
