Jamshedpur: The start of the IPL has activated a massive online betting market across the city, with illegal transactions ranging from Rs 10 to 15 lakh per match. Bookmakers are aggressively expanding their network by recruiting new customers through mobile applications, posing a significant challenge to police surveillance.
Digital Shift: 21 Apps Powering Illegal Trade
Betting syndicates have abandoned traditional methods in favour of high-tech digital platforms. Currently, bookmakers operate this illegal trade through 21 different mobile applications.
- The Process: Bookmakers provide personalized login IDs and passwords to users, allowing them to place bets on matches instantly.
- Digital Payments: The entire transaction process is now digital. Winners receive funds directly into their bank accounts via the apps, while the syndicate recovers losses from users through online transfers.
This digital-only approach makes it increasingly difficult for law enforcement to track the money trail.
Hotspots and Targets
The betting network has identified Bistupur, Mango, Govindpur, and Jugsalai as primary hotspots. Agents in these areas form small, localized networks to trap new participants. The syndicates specifically target the youth, luring them with the promise of “quick money.” There are 21 active platforms available for online betting, several of which operate under the “Mahadev” umbrella.
Police Response
The city’s Cyber Cell is currently working to identify the digital footprint of these operators. City SP Kumar Shivashish confirmed that authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
“We are keeping a close watch on these illegal networks. With the help of the Cyber Cell, we will identify these apps and take strict legal action against those involved,” stated SP Shivashish.
