Jamshedpur: Physiotherapists in India have received long-awaited legal recognition, with the Kerala High Court delivering a landmark judgment allowing qualified physiotherapists to use the prefix “Doctor” before their names.
The court has also affirmed their right to practice independently, giving a significant boost to the professional status and autonomy of physiotherapists. Sharing details of the ruling, Indian Physiotherapy Association (IPA) Jharkhand State Executive Member Dr Gautam Kumar Bharti and State Secretary Dr Ajit Kumar said the decision marks a major milestone for the profession.
They informed that the judgment was delivered in Writ Petition No. 41064/2025, filed by the Indian Association of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation. Following the verdict, qualified physiotherapists are now legally authorised not only to use the “Doctor” prefix but also to treat patients independently without external interference.
The ruling is being viewed as a far-reaching decision in the healthcare sector, as it provides constitutional and legal strength to the professional dignity and rights of physiotherapists. Office-bearers of the Jharkhand association welcomed the judgment, stating that it would help improve the overall quality of healthcare services across the country.
