International athlete’s wife duped of cash, jewellery at Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: In a daylight con, unidentified fraudsters allegedly duped 53-year-old Sangeeta Mahanta, wife of international athlete and Tata Motors employee Lal Mohan Mahanta, of jewellery, cash and other valuables in Telco on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred around 9:30 am near Rock Garden Park in the N-Type-1 area under Telco police station area when Sangeeta Mahanta had stepped out to buy vegetables. According to reports, a group of unknown persons approached her, engaged her in conversation and gradually gained her trust by posing as well-wishers.

The fraudsters allegedly frightened her by warning of an impending misfortune and convinced her to remove all valuables she was carrying. Believing their claims, she handed over her gold chain, gold ring, cash kept in her purse, mobile phone and even the keys to her house.

The accused then asked her to walk a few steps ahead. By the time she realized she had been deceived, the fraudsters had fled the spot with the valuables.

Upon receiving information, police reached the scene and launched an investigation. CCTV footage from nearby locations is being examined to identify the culprits. The broad daylight incident has triggered concern among local residents, while police have assured that efforts are underway to trace and arrest those involved.
