Seraikela, Sep 24: Gamharia police arrested an inter-state ATM thief, identified as Rashmi Ranjan Bej, from Adarshnagar locality on Saturday.
According to Superintendent of Police (SP), Seraikela-Kharsawan, Anand Prakash, “We have recovered 45 stolen ATM cards from the possession of the accused. He used to swap ATM cards of gullible citizens and later withdraw cash by using them without their knowledge. The arresting was made possible with the help of two local youths.”
Police took the help of one Kundan Kumar Tiwary and his friend to trap the ATM thief, who is a native of Girigola, Kendrapara, Odisha.
“Kundan’s mother Kalpana Devi was informed by Gamharia police station that her money had been withdrawn through fraud from an ATM booth in Gamharia. Kundan, on coming to know about the incident, did not get his mother’s ATM card blocked but tried to find out the location of the ATM thief with the help of a message received on his mother’s mobile phone. When the thief once again went to the ATM to withdraw money on Friday evening, he was caught by Kundan and his friends and handed over to police,” said the SP.
Police have recovered CCTV footage showing Bej committing the ATM swapping crime and illegal withdrawal.
