Industry, govt should jointly promote food processing sector: Saryu Rai

Jamshedpur, May 23: Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce & Industry & Adityapur Industrial Area Development Authority (AIADA) jointly organized discussion on prospects of food processing industries in Kolhan at Chamber Bhawan in Bistupur on Saturday.

Present on the occasion was Saryu Rai state Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs Ministeralong with SCCI President Suresh Sonthalia, members of chamber and others.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Saryu Rai said that the academic fraternity, industryand the government should come together and work for promotionand development of food processing sector in Jharkhand.

Jharkhand has a lot of scope to grow in food processingindustry and technology in this sector has also beendeveloped, Rai said at a seminar, ‘Opportunities for FoodProcessing in Kolhan’, jointly organised by Singhbhum Chamberof Commerce and Industry (SCCI) and Adityapur Industrial AreaDevelopment Authority (AIADA) at ‘Chamber Bhawan’ here.

“The only thing we need is to make a sincere effort totake advantage of the technologies and process the perishablefruits and vegetables to preserve it,” the Minister said.

Assuring all assistance to investors keen to pump inresources in this sector, the Minister talked about the needfor quality production and to conduct quality test before thecommencement of production.

“Of the total fruits and vegetables the country producesannually, around 25 to 30 per cent of perishable produce(fruits and vegetables) worth Rs 50,000 crore are wasted dueto lack of facility or awareness,” said Professor H N Mishra,Head of Department (Agriculture) at IIT, Kharagpur.

The Managing Director of AIADA, Yugal Kishore Choubeyregretted that mineral-rich Jharkhand is lagging despitehaving enough potential for growth.

Choubey said AIADA would provide land for prospectiveinvestors keen to invest in this sector.

SCCI President Suresh Sonthalia said the Kolhan region,comprising East and West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharswandistricts, is the topmost region of the state as far asproduction of vegetables is concerned but it does not havefacilities to preserve it.
