Melbourne (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese fast-tracked bilateral ties on Friday, signing a series of historic agreements across defence, civilian nuclear energy, critical minerals, and cyber technologies.

Meeting at the Annual Leaders’ Summit in Melbourne, the two leaders issued a Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation. They also vowed to accelerate negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) and a bilateral investment treaty to supercharge trade.

• Why it matters: Australia holds roughly 28% of the world’s uranium resources but previously refused to supply because India is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

• Space Exploration: Australia will support India’s Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme by hosting a temporary space tracking terminal on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
