Impostors go on ATM crawl across city

Jamshedpur: Impostors stole a laptop and 20 credit and debit cards of a property consultant, Rakesh Jha, through from his vehicle parked near Kesavjee Chhaganlal jewelry shop at Bistupur in broad daylight on Thursday.

Police said the culprits withdrew cash worth over Rs 1 lakh by using different cards till afternoon from different ATM kiosks across the city after making away with the cards kept in a bag in the vehicle, police said.

The culprits, reportedly four in numbers, first came near Jhas car and asked the driver to see if his notes had fallen on the road. The driver looked out to find few currency notes lying on the road. He however told the strangers the notes were not his. On being repeatedly asked by them, he finally came out to pick the notes.

By the time, the impostors who had planted the notes on road, picked the bag containing laptop and ATM cards belonging to Jha and escaped in no time, police said.

Later, Jha while registering an FIR for the theft at the Bistupur police station got SMS alert on his mobile phone for the ATM withdrawals from his bank account. Alarmed, he rushed to the ATM at Sakchi with police to track the thieves.

By the time he reached there, he got another SMS for ATM withdrawal near Station Road. Both Jha and police officials were a harrowed lot running from one ATM to the other in search of the culprits without making any success.

Police frisked several commuters at Bistupur after the incident in a bid to nab the culprits. They also went through video footage captured by CCTV cameras installed near the jewelry shop at Bistupur.
