Jamshedpur: City police here on Sunday claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of imposters duping people by making calls in the name of senior bureaucrats of the rank of Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary. The kingpin of the racket, identified as Ranjan Kumar Mishra alias Ankit Mishra, was arrested from Garabasa under Bagbera police station area. He is a native of Gaya, Bihar, police said.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of East Singhbhum Anoop Birtharay, the accused was arrested on the basis of a tip-off. Mishra duped several senior government officials, contractors and other influential people of several lakhs through phone calls while claiming to be the Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary or other senior bureaucrat of different states. He used to demand huge sums in his bank accounts and succeeded in his attempts several times.
One Rakesh Rai of Sitamarhi, Bihar, used to help him get the money transferred to bank accounts.
The SSP said the accused had spilled the beans and confessed his crime during interrogation. On 5th September last, Mishra got Rs 10 lakh transferred to his account from one Lalit Patel, a contractor in Bhopal. He also got Rs 15 lakh transferred to his account by one Anand Patel on 7th September last.
So far, Mishra has been able to collect around Rs 2 crore in his account, said the SSP.
The SSP said the accused has a house in Namotola, Parsudih which he purchased in Rs 11.5 lakh. The accused used to switch off his mobile or change his location to evade being traced, said Birtharay.
