IMD predicts light to moderate rain for Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: Many places across Jharkhand are set to witness light to moderate rainfall over the next 24 hours, according to a bulletin issued by the IMD’s Ranchi Meteorological Centre. While this will bring some respite to the dry spell, weathermen have indicated that there are no possibilities of heavy showers during this period.

The current weather pattern is being influenced by a cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh. This has led to the formation of a low-pressure area over the North Bay of Bengal and the coastal areas of Bangladesh and Gangetic West Bengal. The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards with height. This system is expected to move west-northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand over the next 24 hours.

In addition to this, the monsoon trough at mean sea level is currently passing through Shri Ganganagar, Rohtak, Delhi, Agra, Siddhi, Daltonganj, Asansol, and then southeastwards to the center of the aforementioned low-pressure area, extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level.

Despite the onset of the monsoon, Jharkhand has experienced a significant shortfall in rainfall this season. As July, a peak monsoon month, draws to a close, the state’s rain deficit stands at a concerning 47 percent. This deficit has had widespread implications, affecting agriculture, water supply, and overall daily life in the region. Notably, none of the state’s 24 districts have recorded surplus rainfall so far this season, underscoring the severity of the drought-like conditions.

Farmers across the state are particularly anxious as the lack of sufficient rainfall has delayed sowing operations and impacted crop growth. Agricultural experts are warning that if the rains do not pick up soon, there could be significant reductions in crop yields, leading to economic hardships for many farmers who rely on the monsoon for irrigation.

Water scarcity is becoming an increasingly pressing issue as well. Many reservoirs and water bodies are at lower-than-usual levels for this time of year. Municipalities across the state are already implementing water rationing measures to cope with the reduced supply. Rural areas, which are heavily dependent on groundwater, are also feeling the strain as wells and hand pumps run dry.

The IMD has urged residents to remain cautious and stay updated with weather advisories. While light to moderate rainfall is expected to provide some relief, it is unlikely to be enough to compensate for the severe deficit experienced so far. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and are prepared to implement further measures if the dry spell continues.

The coming days will be critical for Jharkhand as the state looks to the skies, hoping for a change in weather patterns that will bring much-needed rainfall to alleviate the mounting challenges faced by its residents.
