Jamshedpur, July 21: A heart-wrenching incident has shaken the residents of Sitaramdera as a 17-year-old girl, identified as Gauri Mukhi, tragically took her own life on Friday morning. The young girl was allegedly subjected to immense pressure and harassment by a private police driver associated with the Sitaramdera police station. Gauri had been enduring the ordeal for the past two months, and matters reached a breaking point when she was pressed to accept the driver’s inappropriate proposal. Overcome by despair, she hanged herself in her bathroom.
The news of the girl’s suicide spread like wildfire in the area, prompting residents of Sitaramdera Harijan Bustee, where Gauri resided, to stage a blockade on the Slag Road. They demanded immediate arrest of the accused police driver, known as Rocky, responsible for driving Gauri to such a tragic end.
Gauri’s father, Gomo Ravidas, revealed that Rocky had relentlessly pursued his daughter and intimidated her into complying with his demands for physical relations. Alongside Rocky, another individual named Pratap Mukhi also allegedly assaulted Gauri and subjected her to constant harassment. Gauri’s recent admission to Tinplate Women’s College had not alleviated her anxiety and fear.
Tragically, Gauri’s mother, Punam Mukhi, is currently in Ghaghidih Central Jail after being arrested for involvement in the sale of marijuana.
The road blockade lasted for over two hours, with protesters demanding justice and swift action against the accused. Senior police officers intervened to clear the blockade, promising to investigate the matter thoroughly.
However, Sitaramdera police station OC in-charge, Vishwanath, denied the victim’s family’s claims that the private driver was responsible for Gauri’s decision to end her life. Vishwanath asserted that while Rocky had worked as a private police driver two years ago, there was no evidence to support the accusations made against him.
Nonetheless, he acknowledged that investigations into the matter are ongoing, and the police are determined to ascertain the truth behind the unfortunate circumstances leading to Gauri’s untimely demise.
The heartrending tragedy has sparked deep sorrow and outrage in the community, with people demanding justice for Gauri and stricter measures against any form of harassment or abuse. The case serves as a poignant reminder of the pressing need to address issues related to harassment and mental health among young individuals, emphasizing the importance of creating a safer environment for vulnerable members of society.
