Jamshedpur, March 20: In a deeply disturbing incident, a patient undergoing treatment for HIV allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the fourth floor of the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College and Hospital early on Friday morning.
The deceased, a resident of Parsudih, had been admitted to the hospital’s Medicine Department for the past few days due to deteriorating health.
According to sources, the incident occurred around 4 am when the hospital premises were relatively quiet.
The patient reportedly leapt from a window on the fourth floor, triggering panic among hospital staff and creating chaos within the premises.
This marks the second such incident in less than three months at the same location. Around two-and-a-half months ago, another patient had similarly died by suicide from the fourth floor of the Medicine Department, raising serious concerns over repeated lapses in hospital safety measures.
Following the incident, hospital authorities acknowledged the gravity of the situation.
MGM Hospital Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jujhar Majhi stated that the process of installing locking systems on all windows has now been initiated to prevent such tragedies in the future. He also admitted that such steps should have been taken earlier.
The recurrence of such incidents has put the hospital administration under scrutiny, with questions being raised about patient safety and monitoring mechanisms. Critics argue that failure to act decisively after the first incident points to negligence and systemic lapses.
The tragic death underscores the urgent need for accountability and immediate implementation of robust safety protocols to ensure that no more lives are lost under similar circumstances
