Guwahati (IANS): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticized Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday for traveling to Jharkhand to conduct political negotiations. Sarma asserted that “Assam’s politics is not run from other states,” reacting to reports of Gogoi seeking an alliance with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).
The Battle for JMM’s Support
Gaurav Gogoi, accompanied by senior leader Jitendra Singh, flew to Ranchi to meet Hemant Soren. Sources indicate that the Congress is attempting to block a potential alliance between the JMM and Akhil Gogoi’s Raijor Dal.
The political maneuvering intensified following these events:
-
March 6: JMM leaders Chamra Linda and Vishwanath Tirkey held a closed-door meeting at Akhil Gogoi’s residence in Guwahati.
-
Strategic Shift: Reports suggest the JMM, Raijor Dal, and the newly formed Jai Bharat Party are discussing a three-way alliance.
-
Hemant Soren’s Role: The Jharkhand CM previously visited Assam this week to attend a Jai Bharat Party meeting, signaling his interest in the state’s electoral landscape.
CM Sarma’s Critique
CM Sarma mocked the move, stating he had never seen an Assam leader travel to Jharkhand for state-level political negotiations.
