Jamshedpur: A speeding heavy vehicle ran over a five year old boy in Jadugora police station area on Monday.
Irked over the incident, hundreds of villagers blocked the Asanbani-Govindpur main road, demanding compensation for the aggrieved family members. A mob caught the driver, identified as Arvind, who was later hospitalized in critical condition. The villagers alleged that the driver was drunk.
Sources said the mishap occurred around 1.45 am when the victim, Uday Mandal, was returning home from school with his grandmother Yashoda Mandal. He was run over by the heavy vehicle. The minor was killed at the scene.
The villagers blocked the road with barricades and stones and disallowed vehicles to play through the spot. They demanded that the vehicle owner should be called to the place of occurrence.
A heavy police deployment was made at the scene to control the situation. Potka Circle Officer Dwarika Baitha also reached the spot to pacify the agitated villagers.
