Jamshedpur: India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting heavy rain in isolated areas of north-eastern Jharkhand within the next 48 hours. The impending downpour is being attributed to the influence of two active cyclonic circulations, expected to significantly impact weather conditions in the region by mid-week.
According to the IMD’s Ranchi Meteorological Centre, these weather systems are likely to bring heavy showers, particularly affecting districts like Dumka, Pakur, Sahebganj, and parts of Jamtara. The forecast indicated that isolated areas could experience intense rainfall and thunderstorms beginning as early as Wednesday, with more widespread showers following thereafter.
On Monday, some areas are expected to witness thundershower activity, marking the beginning of unsettled weather. The meteorological office has warned residents of these regions to remain alert, especially in areas prone to flooding or waterlogging.
The IMD has attributed the upcoming heavy rain to a combination of two weather systems currently influencing the region. At present, a monsoon trough is running through several major locations, including Bikaner, Guna, Sagar, Bilaspur, and Chandbali, before extending southeastwards to the west-central Bay of Bengal.
Additionally, an east-west trough is currently stretching from the Andhra Pradesh coast to the south coast of Myanmar. This system is embedded with two upper air cyclonic circulations: one positioned over the west-central Bay of Bengal, and another situated over south coastal Myanmar. Both circulations are extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, according to meteorologists.
These weather patterns are likely to result in the formation of a low-pressure area over the west-central Bay of Bengal. This development could further enhance moisture-laden winds being driven towards the Indian subcontinent, intensifying rainfall across north-eastern Jharkhand.
Despite the predicted rains, Jharkhand is currently experiencing a 3% rainfall deficit since the beginning of the monsoon season. The anticipated showers over the next few days are likely to provide relief in some areas, though it remains to be seen if they will substantially reduce the deficit in the short term.
Meteorologists from the Ranchi Met office have, however, indicated that there will be no significant changes in both maximum and minimum temperatures over the next two days. Daytime temperatures are expected to hover around 30°C to 32°C, while night time lows will remain in the range of 23°C to 25°C.
