Jamshedpur: India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow
alert for heavy rainfall in seven districts of Jharkhand on August 19
(Tuesday), warning residents to remain cautious. The alert covers the
south-western and adjoining districts of East Singhbhum, West
Singhbhum, Simdega, Seraikela-Kharsawan, Palamu, Garhwa, and Latehar.
According to the IMD, these districts are likely to witness heavy
rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at a
speed of 30–40 kmph. The weather office has advised residents to avoid
unnecessary travel during heavy showers and to stay indoors or in safe
locations during thunderstorms. Farmers have been cautioned against
working in open fields during this period.
While the southern and western belt is likely to face inclement
weather, Ranchi and its adjoining districts will see relatively clear
and sunny skies. The IMD said the capital region may experience mild
heat and humidity due to rising day temperatures. On Sunday, Ranchi
recorded a maximum temperature of 27.4°C, while Jamshedpur reported
33.1°C, Bokaro 32.5°C, and Chaibasa 31.8°C.
Officials informed that Jharkhand has been witnessing uneven rainfall
distribution this monsoon, with some districts receiving surplus rain
while others continue to remain below normal levels. The fresh spell
of rain is expected to improve water levels in reservoirs and provide
relief to farmers in rain-fed areas.
The disaster management authorities have urged people to take
precautions during the forecast period. Citizens have been advised: To
stay indoors during lightning and thunderstorms. Not to take shelter
under trees, electric poles, or temporary structures. To avoid
venturing into low-lying or waterlogged areas. To keep mobile phones
charged and follow official advisories.
With the alert in place, district administrations have been asked to
remain on standby to deal with any emergency arising from heavy
rainfall or lightning strikes.
