Nature’s hidden treasure discovered in the lap of Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary near the Steel City; rare plant Blepharis maderaspatensis documented for the first time in Jharkhand.
Jamshedpur: A rare botanical treasure has been unearthed within the rocky slopes and dense forests of the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary. A highly elusive plant of African origin, Blepharis maderaspatensis (commonly known as Creeping Blepharis), has been officially discovered here, marking a significant milestone in the botanical history of Jharkhand.
Experts Identify Rare Species
This discovery was made by renowned environmentalist and forest expert Raja Ghosh during a recent research expedition. Ghosh found that the plant is thriving naturally in the unique gravelly and rocky soil of Dalma. While the species is primarily native to Africa, Arabian countries, and tropical Asia, its presence in India was previously thought to be restricted to southern states like Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.
Ayurveda’s ‘Super Plant’: A Boon for Health
According to Raja Ghosh, this plant is regarded as nothing short of “Sanjeevani” (a miracle life-giver) in Ayurveda due to its potent medicinal properties:
- Arthritis and Inflammation: The plant is a powerful natural anti-inflammatory agent, providing significant relief for joint pain and swelling.
- Diabetes Management: Its seeds are traditionally used to help balance and regulate blood sugar levels.
- Antiseptic Properties: The leaf juice is considered a “panacea” for rapidly healing wounds and curing mouth ulcers.
- Nervous System Support: It is used as a potent remedy to strengthen the nervous system and treat nerve-related weaknesses.
- Other Benefits: It is known to alleviate headaches, treat burning sensations during urination, and boost overall physical immunity.
Another Rare Find: Pterospermum xylocarpum
The botanical survey revealed more than just one secret. Another rare tree species, Pterospermum xylocarpum, was also identified in the sanctuary. This tree had previously only been documented in the hilly regions of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Its presence in Jharkhand confirms that the Dalma ecosystem is exceptionally conducive to the conservation of rare and diverse species.
The Need for Conservation
Raja Ghosh describes the Dalma Sanctuary as a “living laboratory” of botanical diversity. He emphasizes that the secrets hidden within the region’s climate and soil are a blessing for both science and the medical world. Experts are now urging the Forest Department to prioritize the documentation and protection of these species to ensure their medicinal benefits can be ethically utilized in the future.
