Jamshedpur: A sudden downpour drenched Jamshedpur on Saturday evening as a low-pressure area over the west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal triggered widespread rainfall, marking the onset of an extended spell of unsettled weather across Jharkhand. The regional meteorological department has issued a weather alert, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next several days.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Ranchi, the current system is expected to impact vast parts of the state, with the exception of some north-western districts, which may experience comparatively milder weather activity.
On May 25, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph are likely to affect several parts of the state. The north-western region is expected to see slightly less intense winds, ranging between 30–40 kmph.

May 26–29: A continued spell of thunderstorms is predicted, with isolated locations across Jharkhand experiencing gusty winds of up to 50 kmph. The pattern is expected to persist, bringing recurring weather disruptions and localized damage risks.
The current instability is being attributed to a trough line extending from a cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan to northeast Madhya Pradesh. This trough passes through north Rajasthan and north Madhya Pradesh, hovering at an altitude of approximately 0.9 km above mean sea level. It is one of the primary systems enhancing convective activity and moisture inflow into the region.
In addition to the trough, another significant weather development is on the horizon. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that a new low-pressure area is likely to form over the west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around May 27. This system is projected to intensify in the subsequent 48 hours, potentially enhancing rainfall activity and wind intensity across eastern India, including Jharkhand.
With volatile weather conditions expected to prevail, authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant. The meteorological department has advised people to: Avoid open areas during thunderstorms. Stay away from tall structures, trees, and electric poles. Secure loose objects that could be blown away by strong winds. Monitor weather bulletins for real-time updates and advisories.
In Jamshedpur, Saturday’s downpour led to brief traffic snarls, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and power outages in some localities. The rainfall, while offering respite from the sweltering heat of recent days, brought with it the early signs of a turbulent weather phase. Local authorities have begun inspecting vulnerable spots in the city and clearing drains to prevent further urban flooding.
