Jamshedpur: Light to moderate rainfall is expected to continue across Jharkhand in the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rain for isolated parts of southern and central Jharkhand starting July 23. The prevailing monsoon conditions are being driven by a depression system currently active over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining southwest Uttar Pradesh.
According to the latest IMD bulletin, the depression is positioned near latitude 26.4°N and longitude 78.0°E — close to Morena and around 30 km northwest of Gwalior. It is moving in a west-northwestward direction at a speed of 17 km/h and is likely to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area over the next 24 hours as it travels through northwest Madhya Pradesh and eastern Rajasthan.
In the immediate term, the IMD has issued a warning for thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by gusty winds (30-40 km/h) at isolated locations across Jharkhand on July 19. Residents are urged to stay cautious and follow safety measures to protect against sudden weather changes.
The monsoon trough currently stretches from Bikaner and Sikar, passing through the depression’s center and extending southeast through Sidhi, Daltonganj, and Purulia before reaching the Bay of Bengal. This configuration is supporting continued active monsoon conditions over Jharkhand.
“We advise citizens, especially in low-lying areas, to stay informed about weather alerts and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall or lightning activity,” said an IMD official.
Authorities have urged people to remain vigilant and take precautions against potential localized flooding and lightning incidents in vulnerable areas.
