Heatwave Havoc in Jamshedpur: Death Toll Reaches 8 in Four Days  

Jamshedpur: The steel city and its adjoining areas continue to reel under an intense and unforgiving heatwave, with the mercury consistently crossing the 40°C mark. The severe weather has claimed three more lives, bringing the total heat-related death toll to eight within the last four days. According to the Meteorological Department, no immediate respite is expected, as scorching conditions and high humidity are predicted to persist for the next 10 days.

The weather department forecast indicates that maximum temperatures will hover between 41°C and 42°C over the coming days. While light rainfall is anticipated around May 29 and June 3, it is unlikely to bring any permanent drop in the soaring temperatures. On Sunday, Jamshedpur recorded a maximum temperature of 40.5°C and a minimum of 29.1°C.

Surge in Hospital Admissions

Local hospitals have reported a significant influx of patients suffering from heat-related illnesses. On Sunday afternoon, three separate fatalities were reported from Bistupur, Sakchi, and Burmamines due to the extreme heat.

• In Bistupur, an unidentified individual collapsed near a cold storage facility and passed away.
• In Burmamines, the body of an elderly man, identified as Satish (alias Raju), was discovered near the Tube Company premises on Sunday evening. Passersby noted that he had been resting under a tree when he collapsed; bleeding from the nose was observed, and locals suspected heatstroke to be the cause of death.

Tragedy at Boxing Practice: 16-Year-Old Collapses and Dies

In a tragic incident in Sakchi, a 16-year-old boy identified as Piyush Patel, a resident of Kashidih Line Number 5, collapsed while undergoing boxing practice at the Sitaramdera Community Center.

He was rushed to the Tata Main Hospital (TMH), where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival. While family members declined a post-mortem examination, medical experts suspect the cause of death to be a sudden cardiac arrest triggered by the severe heatwave.

Youth Dies Returning from Market

In a separate incident in Potka, a 30-year-old resident of Matyal village named Mohan Sardar died on Saturday. He had gone to the Haldipokhar Haat (weekly market) for shopping. While returning, his health severely deteriorated near Lamugrasai village. He sat down under a tree to rest but succumbed shortly after. Local police have sent the body to MGM Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Booth Level Officer (BLO) Faints During Duty

The extreme weather also took a toll on election/administrative duties. A Booth Level Officer (BLO) deployed for SSR (Special Summary Revision) work under the Mango Municipal Corporation fainted due to the scorching heat. The incident caused brief panic at the booth. Fellow workers and locals immediately assisted the officer, moving him to a shaded, safe area, and senior district officials were informed of the matter.
