Rumours of Lockdown Completely False: Hardeep Singh Puri

New Delhi (IANS): Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday dismissed rumours of a nationwide lockdown as “entirely false,” confirming that the government has no such proposal under consideration. The Minister moved to silence growing public concern and curb misinformation regarding potential movement restrictions.

Government Monitors Global Stability

In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Puri emphasized that while the global situation remains in flux, the government is monitoring energy, supply chains, and essential commodities in real-time.

“Under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi Ji, we are taking all necessary steps to ensure the uninterrupted availability of fuel and critical supplies,” Puri stated. He urged the public to remain calm and responsible, labeling attempts to spread panic as “irresponsible and harmful.”

Context of the Speculation

The lockdown rumours gained momentum due to several converging factors:

  • Energy Concerns: Global oil and gas shortages sparked fears of economic cooling.

  • Misinterpreted Remarks: Officials clarified that the public misinterpreted Prime Minister Modi’s recent calls for “preparedness” regarding West Asia tensions as a sign of impending restrictions.

  • Anniversary Anxiety: The surge in online speculation coincided with the sixth anniversary of the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown.

The government reiterated that “COVID-like preparedness” refers strictly to administrative readiness and contingency planning, not stay-at-home orders or mobility curbs.
