Jamshedpur: Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a young man near the Sai Complex in Kitadih under Bagbera police station late Friday night.
The victim, identified as Ashish Kumar Bhagat, a resident of the area, sustained grievous injuries and is battling for his life at Tata Main Hospital (TMH). Doctors described his condition as critical but stable, with heavy blood loss making treatment extremely challenging.
The attack occurred around 10.30 pm. Residents were jolted by the sudden sound of gunfire and rushed out to find Ashish lying in a pool of blood on the roadside. He had been shot in the lower part of his body, and eyewitnesses said the young man was barely conscious as locals tried to help him.
Police were alerted without delay. A team from Bagbera police station reached the scene promptly, secured the area, and began a preliminary investigation. Officers recovered an empty cartridge and a shattered mobile phone screen, which are expected to aid in identifying the assailants.
While the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, investigators are exploring multiple angles, including old enmity and personal disputes. Local sources hinted that Ashish may have had past tensions with a few youths in the area, but police have not confirmed any such link officially.
“We are not ruling out any theory at this stage. A thorough probe is underway, and CCTV footage from the vicinity is being scrutinised,” said the Bagbera police station in-charge. Technical evidence and phone records are also being analysed to trace possible leads.
The attack has sparked widespread fear among Kitadih residents, who described the incident as shocking in what was once regarded as a peaceful neighbourhood. Many expressed concern about the apparent rise in criminal activity and the lack of deterrence.
“It is terrifying. We have never seen such violence here. People are afraid to step out after dark now,” said a local shopkeeper.
In response to growing unease, additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain order and reassure the public. Patrolling has been intensified, and police are appealing to residents to share any information that could help trace the attackers.
Meanwhile, Ashish remains under close medical supervision at TMH. Doctors are monitoring his condition round the clock, as the next 48 hours are said to be critical for his recovery.
Police have assured that swift action will be taken to apprehend those responsible and restore a sense of safety in the community.
