Jamshedpur: A fierce encounter broke out between Maoists and security forces early Wednesday morning in the forested Tonto region of West Singhbhum, triggering a major anti-insurgency operation. The operation is part of an ongoing mission to track down wanted Maoist leader Misir Besra, who carries a reward of ₹1 crore.
Encounter begins during early morning operation
According to reports, personnel of the 209 CoBRA Battalion were conducting a search operation in the dense forests of Rutugutu when they came face-to-face with Maoists around 4:30 AM. This led to a heavy exchange of fire between the two sides.
Combing operations underway for two days
Security forces had been carrying out continuous combing operations in Boroi and Tunbera areas under the Goilkera police station limits for the past two days following intelligence inputs about Maoist movement in the region.
Gunbattle continues intermittently
Sources indicated that firing continued intermittently throughout the morning as forces tightened their grip on the forest zone. Reinforcements have been deployed, and the entire area has been placed under heightened alert.
Police confirm ongoing operation
Superintendent of Police Amit Renu confirmed that the operation is still underway and that security forces are maintaining strict vigilance across the area to prevent any escape by the insurgents.
Intelligence points to rising Maoist activity
The encounter comes amid reports of increased Maoist presence in the Kolhan region following the recent killing of a former Maoist in the Goilkera area. Intelligence agencies had warned of renewed activity by the group led by Misir Besra in the Saranda forests.
High alert across region
Security agencies have intensified surveillance and search efforts, indicating that a prolonged operation may continue in the dense forest terrain. Officials said all movements are being closely monitored as forces attempt to corner the Maoist group.
