India-Flagged LPG Tanker Green Sanvi Crosses Strait of Hormuz

Two More Tankers in Queue

New Delhi (IANS): The India-flagged liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker Green Sanvi has successfully transited east of the Strait of Hormuz. Ship tracking data confirms the vessel is the seventh Indian ship to safely clear the maritime chokepoint during the current West Asia conflict.

To navigate the sensitive waterway, the vessel utilized a designated corridor through Iran’s territorial waters.

Key Transit Details

  • Cargo: The tanker carries approximately 44,000 tonnes of LPG, meeting roughly half a day’s pre-conflict Indian consumption.

  • Upcoming Movements: Industry experts expect two more India-flagged tankers—Green Asha and Jag Vikram—to cross the Strait and head toward India in the coming days.

  • Current Presence: Seventeen India-flagged ships now operate in the Persian Gulf region, including crude oil tankers, LNG carriers, and container ships.

Diplomatic Coordination

India continues to engage with Iran diplomatically to ensure safe passage for its merchant fleet. While Iran has restricted most vessel movements during the war, it clarified last week that non-hostile nations—specifically India, China, Russia, Iraq, and Pakistan—may transit the strait in coordination with Iranian authorities.

“The waterway remains operational for friendly nations,” confirmed Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

During the transit, Green Sanvi signaled its Indian identity and the nationality of its seafarers, following the now-standard protocol for vessels coordinating with Iran.

Strategic Importance

The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital artery for global energy flows. The successful passage of Green Sanvi underscores India’s ability to secure energy supply lines through coordinated diplomacy and maritime safety measures, even as regional tensions disrupt global trade.
