Grandsons arrested for killing grandmother on witchcraft suspicion near Jamshedpur

Seraikela: In a shocking revelation, the gruesome case of a headless and handless woman’s body found on a railway track in Gamharia police station area has been solved. The victim, identified as 65-year-old Bhavani Kaivart, was brutally murdered by her own two grandsons on suspicion of being a witch. The Seraikela police acted swiftly, arresting the two accused and recovering crucial evidence.

 

On March 30, 2025, the Gamharia police received information that a decapitated female body was lying on the railway track 100 meters away from Yashpur railway gate. When the police arrived at the scene, it became evident that the murder had been committed elsewhere, and the body had been dumped on the tracks in an attempt to disguise it as a suicide or accident.

Recognizing the brutality of the crime, the Superintendent of Police (SP) immediately formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the leadership of Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sameer Kumar Sawaiya.

Through technical and physical evidence, the deceased was identified as Bhavani Kaivart, a resident of Narayanpur, Seraikela. As the investigation progressed, suspicion fell on her two grandsons – 23-year-old Laxman Kaivart and 20-year-old Chandan Kaivart.

During interrogation, both confessed to killing their grandmother because they believed she was practicing witchcraft. Their superstition-driven fear led them to commit the horrific crime.

Based on the information provided by the accused, the police recovered: The severed head and hands of the victim.The sharp axe used in the murder and a Honda Sign motorcycle (Registration No. JH22F 9170) used to transport the body.

The successful operation was carried out by a team led by SDPO Sameer Kumar Sawaiya, along with Gamharia Police Station In-charge Kunal Kumar, Sub Inspector Arun Kumar Mahato, Sub Inspector Budhan Singh Bodra, Assistant Sub Inspectors Bishu Oraon and Shailesh Kumar Yadav, Havildar Dilip Purti, Chambaru Mudaiya, constable Subhash Mahato, and armed forces personnel.

While the main accused have been arrested, the police are continuing their investigation to uncover any additional motives or accomplices involved in the murder.
