Jamshedpur, April 24: The hub of the steel city was virtually transformed into an urban village on Sunday, April 24, on the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, as thousands of panchayat delegates from across the country descended on the spic and span streets of the town.

Aside from delegates from different regions of Jharkhand, more than 2000 people from other states were in the steel city to attend “Gramoday se Bharat Uday Abhiyan.”

Some of them from reside in such remote areas that they started their journey from home almost a week ago to listen to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the JRD Tata Sports Complex.

For most of them, a glimpse of the 9.7 MTPA steel plant, properly managed traffic, various civic amenities and a warm reception by Jharkhand government was a unique experience.

The host city, delegates and theme of the event mutually complimented each other as the concept of “Gramoday se Bharat Uday” came live on the streets of one of the most developed cities of the country.

According to the officials of rural development Prime Minister would felicitate some of the panchayats on the basis of their performances to encourage others to follow the footprints.

“The award ceremony is nothing but an idea to tell several others what best practices are and how gram panchayats can become the engines of rural development,” they said.

The campaign that was launched by Modi in Mhow in Madhya Pradesh on April 14 aimed at creating awareness among the panchayati raj institutions about their powers, rights and need for participation in country’s development.

The Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj has been celebrating the National Panchayati Raj Day (NPRD) on April 24 to mark 73rd Constitutional Amendment day that gave legal framework to Panchayati Raj System in 1993. The government started celebrating the day since 2010.

So far, NPRD has been celebrated in Delhi, but this year the event is part of the ‘Gramoday se Bharat Uday Abhiyan’ and set to be celebrated at gram panchayat level so the union ministry for rural development decided to organize the culmination outside national capital and Jamshedpur got a chance to host panchayat delegates.
