Jamshedpur/Ranchi, Dec 11: The Jharkhand government has informed the Assembly that the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has begun preparing Urban River Management Plans (URMPs) for cities across five states situated along the Ganga and its basin.

These plans aim at conservation, revival, sustainable management and environmental protection of rivers in the basin. Over the next two years, URMPs will be prepared for 62 cities across these states.

In the first phase, five cities from Jharkhand—Ranchi, Dhanbad, Chas, Adityapur and Sahebganj/Rajmahal—have been selected for URMP preparation.

The information was shared by the state government on Thursday in response to a submission made by Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy.

The MLA had asked the government to make public the detailed plans prepared for Ranchi and Jamshedpur under the River Cities Alliance initiative of the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and to implement them on priority for sustainable river management along the Subernarekha and Kharkai rivers.

Responding to his submission, the government stated that the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), New Delhi, along with its knowledge partner Alluvium India, has been appointed to prepare the Urban River Management Plans.

It was further noted that 14 Jharkhand cities—Ranchi, Dhanbad, Deoghar, Adityapur, Chas, Medininagar, Mango, Giridih, Jamshedpur (JUSCO area), Sahebganj, Rajmahal, Jugsalai, Phusro and Chirkunda—are already members of the River Cities Alliance.

Master plans for all 14 cities will be prepared in phases, with the five selected cities included in the first phase.
