Jamshedpur: An elaborate matrimonial scam has come to light in Govindpur’s Prakash Nagar area after a woman allegedly posed as a prospective bride to dupe a local family. The suspect, identified as Pooja Pandey, reportedly won the family’s trust over several months before fleeing with jewellery worth lakhs of rupees.
The Honeypot Trap
The victim, Nikhil Singh, met the woman while she was staying in a local paying guest accommodation. Over time, Pandey assured Nikhil of her intent to marry him, successfully embedding herself into his family circle.
The fraud culminated during a janeu (sacred thread) ceremony at Nikhil’s residence. Having fully gained the family’s confidence, Pandey reportedly obtained the keys to the household cupboard.
The Theft Discovered
The scheme unraveled on March 6 as the ceremony concluded. When Nikhil’s aunt attempted to retrieve her mangalsutra from the cupboard, Pandey repeatedly made excuses to avoid handing over the keys. Sensing something was wrong, the family eventually opened the cupboard to find their cash and jewellery missing.
A History of Deceit
Local inquiries and police questioning have revealed startling allegations:
-
Hidden Life: The woman is reportedly already married and has two children.
-
Serial Offender: Neighbors claim she previously targeted another house in the area using the exact same “marriage pretext” to gain access to valuables.
-
Targeted Scam: Authorities believe she specifically traps young men in romantic relationships to gain entry into their homes.
Police Action
Govindpur Police have taken the woman into custody. Officers are currently investigating her involvement in similar unsolved thefts in the region and are working to recover the stolen assets.
