Governor bats for women empowerment, asks colleges to impart


Jamshedpur : Governor and chancellor of universities, Droupadi Murmu on Saturday stressed upon the need to impart self-defence lessons to the girl students in the colleges across the state.

She said that the girls should be provided training so that they can defense themselves in the time of need. She noted that the primary motto for people here should be to provide quality education but the girls must also learn to defend themselves.

Murmu was addressing the first graduation day ceremony of Jamshedpur Women’s College in Bistupur. In her address to 2529 students from the batch 2009 to 2012, who received their graduating certificates and medals, the Governor cited the examples of Olympic champions Sakshi Malik and P V Sindhu and said that the girls of today are raring to lead the nation. It is important for them to receive quality education and aspire to serve the nation.

“At the present prevailing situation it is important to impart education to the needy girl children and Jamshedpur Women’s College as an institution is doing a wonderful job. Girl students need to be promoted in the field of education. However, the college must work harder and maintain the quality of education here,” said Murmu amidst a gathering of about 4000 people.

The Governor also lauded the kind of education, knowledge and skills the college has been providing and has also been successful to provide the same to the weaker sections of the society.

The governor also said that the college has been working hard in upgrading the competency skills of its students. She said that the steps also be taken to promote women empowerment.

Shukla Mahanty, principal of the college and vice chancellor of Kolhan University RPP Singh also addressed the gathering .

On the occasion 46 students were given gold medals for their performance. Jamshedpur Women’s College was established in 1953 with aim to provide the women of Jamshedpur a platform to shape their careers and lives.

With time were the demands of the society and the nation grew and changed.

The college, a constituent unit of Kolhan University, has been conferred ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ and ‘Conferment of Autonomous Status’ by University Grants Commission, New Delhi. It offers UG, PG, several vocational and add-on courses and B.Ed programmes.
