Jamshedpur, April 7: The residents of the steel city observed Good Friday, a significant Christian holiday that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, with solemnity and devotion. The day was marked with various religious ceremonies, prayers, and acts of penance as Christians reflected on the sacrifice of Jesus and his crucifixion.

Churches were filled with the faithful who attended solemn services, including the Stations of the Cross, a re-enactment of the events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion. Many Christians participated in fasting, abstinence from meat, and other forms of penance as a way of expressing repentance and solidarity with Jesus’ suffering.

The streets were quiet and reflective as Christians observed Good Friday. Some churches organized processions with participants carrying crosses, while others held prayer vigils and lit candles in remembrance of Jesus’ sacrifice.

Throughout the day, clergy delivered sermons that emphasized the significance of Jesus’ crucifixion in Christian theology and teachings of love, forgiveness, and redemption. Many Christians also spent time in personal reflection and meditation, contemplating the profound meaning of Good Friday in their faith and lives.
In addition to the religious observances, several charitable organizations and churches extended acts of compassion and service to those in need, reflecting the spirit of selflessness and charity associated with Good Friday.

Despite the somber tone of the day, there was also a sense of hope among the Christian community , as Good Friday is followed by Easter Sunday, which commemorates the resurrection of Jesus and signifies new life, forgiveness, and salvation.
Father Peter went on to note that Christ died for the sins of others. He wanted to bring man closer to God. He may have been put to death physically but remained alive in spirit.
“Every year people turn out at churches for prayer. Jesus told his disciples that though he would be crucified, he would resurrect himself on the third day following his death. That is why the Sunday after Good Friday is marked by Easter celebrations and my message for that day is, love thy god, and love thy neighbour,” he noted.
On the other hand Christians across the city are also gearing up to celebrate Easter Sunday by attending church early in the morning and ending the period of Lent with a sumptuous traditional breakfast.
Churches serve a piece of cake made of egg and milk to end the 40-day Lent period, during which most people forgo non-vegetarian food. The other delicacies include baked bananas, egg curry and stew made with mutton, chicken or vegetables.
