Jamshedpur, Nov 28: A 10-year-old boy was robbed of his gold locket by three miscreants in Bhuiyandih’s Kalyan Nagar on Thursday evening, sparking fear among residents and raising questions over lax police patrolling.
Sarita Devi of A Block had taken her son, Upendra Caebrata, to Kalyan Nagar Chowk to buy household items. While returning, the boy walked nearly 100 metres ahead when three youths suddenly emerged from behind the Shiv Temple, grabbed him, covered his mouth and snatched the gold locket from his neck.
By the time Sarita Devi reached him, the frightened child was in tears and the accused had fled through the lanes. Locals gathered on hearing the commotion and alerted the police.
Residents allege that irregular patrolling has emboldened anti-social elements. They say the movement of outsiders has increased and youths involved in drug consumption and illegal sale of alcohol, ganja and brown sugar frequent the area.
A similar snatching incident occurred a month ago in C Block, where a woman’s earrings were taken. Locals say the once-peaceful neighbourhood of five decades is fast becoming a crime hotspot.
They have demanded intensified police patrolling, identification of suspicious youths and strict action against drug activities to restore safety in the locality.
