Ghatshila turns political hotspot as JMM, BJP parade top leaders on nomination day

Jamshedpur: The political temperature in the Ghatshila Assembly constituency soared on Friday as JMM’s candidate Somesh Soren and BJP’s Babulal Soren filed their nomination papers before the Returning Officer amid a massive show of strength by both the political parties.

The nomination event turned into a political spectacle as Chief Minister Hemant Soren stood along Somesh while filing the papers.

Meanwhile, on the other front, former Chief Minister Champai Soren, former Chief Minister Babulal Marandi, and AJSU Party supremo Sudesh Mahto — accompanied Babulal Soren, underlining the BJP’s intent to project a united NDA front in Jharkhand ahead of the crucial bypoll scheduled for November 11.

Before filing his nomination, Babulal Soren performed traditional puja at Jahersthan in Jilinggoda, his ancestral village in Seraikela-Kharsawan district. Clad in traditional attire, he offered prayers and meditated briefly before proceeding to Ghatsila, symbolically seeking divine blessings for his electoral journey.

The Ghatsila Assembly constituency has a complex electoral history. In 2005, it was held by the Congress, before the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) captured it in 2009. The BJP won the seat in 2014, but since then, the JMM has retained control for two consecutive terms.

In the 2024 Assembly elections, the late Ramdas Soren of the JMM defeated Babulal Soren in a closely contested battle. Ramdas secured 98,356 votes, while Babulal managed 75,910, reflecting a competitive political ground.

This by-election, necessitated by the untimely demise of Minister Ramdas Soren, has now set the stage for a face-off between the next generation — Somesh Soren, son of Ramdas Soren, representing the JMM, and Babulal Soren, son of Champai Soren, contesting for the BJP.

Interestingly, both contenders share deep political roots and a personal rapport, having grown up in families long associated with Jharkhand’s political landscape. Somesh Soren carries forward his father’s JMM legacy, while Babulal Soren steps into the political footsteps of his father, Champai Soren, now a prominent BJP leader after switching sides.

Observers note that both candidates are well-acquainted with each other’s political strategies and local influence, making the by-election an evenly poised contest.

The Ghatsila by-election has now evolved into a battle of prestige between the ruling Grand Alliance and the NDA. Chief Minister Hemant Soren has shown confidence in victory by fielding Somesh Soren without granting him ministerial rank — a contrast to earlier bypoll strategies in Madhupur and Dumri. On the other hand, Champai Soren, familiar with the region’s dynamics, is determined to reclaim the seat for the BJP.

Both father-son duos have been touring villages extensively, interacting with voters and strengthening their grassroots connect. Several senior BJP leaders have also camped in Ghatsila to supervise campaign efforts, underscoring the party’s seriousness about reclaiming lost ground in the Kolhan region.

During his address to party workers, BJP leader Champai Soren accused the current government of failing on every front and asserted that this time, the people would rally behind the BJP for change.

Meanwhile, JDU MLA Saryu Roy, supporting the BJP camp, stated that although a BJP victory would not destabilize the state government, it would be a crucial step in reining in what he described as an “intoxicated government.”
